Our In-House Vet Dr Barbara Fougere BSc BVMS (Hons) MODT MHSc (Herb Med) BHSc (Comp Med) Grad Dip Herb Med, Grad Dip VCHM, Grad Dip VWHM, Grad Dip VA gives advice on vision care. Those black button eyes that communicate so much to us, or deep brown eyes that show their love and trust, or bright expectant eyes just waiting for you to grab a lead get ready to walk! Your pet’s eyes share so much more than their own attempts to communicate with us. Those beautiful eyes can share vital information about their overall health and wellbeing. Vision loss is a common problem that occurs with aging. But it can also start in the young with hereditary diseases or injury or other health conditions. And vision loss can turn out to be a sign of a larger problem like diabetes, heart, liver or kidney disease. Some signs suggestive of vision change include:
Bumping into things
Being easily startled
Anxiety with new places
Hesitation with stairs
A cloudy appearance in the eyes
Rubbing at the eyes
Redness, irritation around the eyes or squinting
By spotting signs of eye problems early, your vet can help your pet’s eyes to feel better and possibly preserve or restore vision. A veterinarian will examine the eyes and may refer you to a veterinary ophthalmologist for specialist care.
Pets over the age of 6 begin to have age related changes to their eyes, and can develop conditions like dry eye- a lack of normal tears that help moisten the eyes. So staring a support strategy early on can help delay those changes.
What can you do care for the health of your pet’s eyes? At least an annual veterinary check-up is a good idea and more frequently with age. As many eye conditions are associated with inflammation and oxidative stress, diet and supplements can play an important role in protecting vision and delaying those age related changes. A simple strategy might be Vision Berry containing Vis-ease- a synergistic blend of plant phytochemicals that provides nutrients and antioxidants that support healthy vision and normal eye function. This can be given daily.
We do take vision for granted but we can be proactive and help protect eyes with Vision Berry. And we can continue to enjoy their beautiful eyes and everything those eyes try to tell us, every time they look at us!.
