Their eyes have two types of colour receptor cells – what does this mean – they see colour within two spectrums of light namely blue and yellow and their relative shades. Humans on the other hand see things in three primary colours and their relative shades. And, we have to remember that just like humans not all dogs like tv, but if one were to generalise, those breeds with a better sense of smell will tend to not be as interested as those that sense via sight instead of smell.

So what do they actually see when they watch tv. Well in essence, when watching tv they will perceive those shapes in just those two colour spectrums. They can also process images quicker than humans and have better motion perception and visual field sense. They can quickly identify any faster moving objects.
There are some channels made particularly for dogs, to provide content created to entertain dogs. Some of these are common knowledge like Dog TV and Animal Planet. It is those episodes with moving animals that those dogs that like to watch will take more interest in. There are still no defined outcomes on the benefits or detriments to dogs watching tv. Some owners say it keeps their dogs’ minds entertained, some think it is good for separation anxiety or stress reducers and some will introduce them to different scenarios in a controlled and safe environment. But those that disagree mention unknown or scary noises which could raise alarm in a pet.
One thing is for sure there is nothing better than cuddling up with your pup, putting your feet up and watching something entertaining, whether your pup is interested or not.
