During VE Day celebrations in the UK, it’s important to remember the significant contributions of animals during World War II. While not directly participating in the celebrations, animals played vital roles in the war effort, assisting with tasks like search and rescue, delivering messages, and even serving as paratroopers.
Animals Supporting VE Day and WW2:
Dogs: Dogs like Rip, who was the first official search and rescue dog, helped to find survivors trapped under rubble during the Blitz. Others, like Brian, were parachuted into Normandy as part of D-Day landings. Dogs were also used for protection, patrol, and even to sniff out mines.
Pigeons: Pigeons like Duke of Normandy were crucial for delivering messages behind enemy lines, even under fire.
Horses: Horses were used for transport and to pull heavy machinery, playing a vital role in logistics.
Other Animals:While less common, other animals like cats and sheep also contributed to the war effort in various ways.
This week and all through the year we at Broadreach Nature celebrate and honour the bravery and support of these animals and their handlers.
