We may be used to our beloved pets suffering from itchy skin in the summer months with the warmer weather but when winter hits and the temperatures cool, it may come as a surprise when the itching and scratching doesn’t stop. We’re to help you understand what might be causing your pet to itch, what home remedies may help soothe your pet and what else you can do to help.
Why is my pet itching and scratching?
There are a few reasons why your pet may be itching and scratching. Let’s take a look:
The environment – you may have thought about this one already but the environment your pets are in can impact your pet’s skin. For example, the warmer weather, increased pollen and freshly cut grass that all come with summer can cause your pet to experience itchy skin. In the colder months, central heating and cleaning detergents – from getting cosy and lying under blankets and around cushions – can cause itchy skin too!
Fleas, ticks and mites – possibly an obvious one but pests like these can cause your dog or cat to have itchy skin. Make sure they are up to date with their treatments and if you think your pet is suffering from a pest like these, contact your vet for additional help and treatment
Food allergies – your cat or dog could be allergic to their daily food or treats! Food allergies can result in dry, itchy skin but also smelly wind and loose stools.
There are a few home remedies you can try to help alleviate your pet’s itchy skin but before you try these, it is important to make sure there is nothing else going on with your pet’s health. Take them to the vets for a full health check first.
Apple cider vinegar – you may have tried apple cider vinegar to eliminate some of your own health issues as it has many healing properties and for dogs, it is great for naturally soothing skin and keeping fleas at bay. You can either dilute some in water and spray it onto your pet’s skin, avoiding their fur, or give them a soak in a warm bath with some apple cider vinegar in it – you may want to rise them after to get rid of the bitter smell
Rolled oats (oatmeal) – rolled oats have naturally moisturising qualities that are nice and gentle on your dog’s skin. As with the apple cider vinegar, you can give your dog a nice oat bath soak but make sure you supervise them so they avoid getting the oaty water in their eyes and around their face. Also, make sure you rinse your dog well after their soak
Coconut oil – this is a great source of naturally good fats and when given with food, it can help with your pet’s bone health. It is also really good at aiding itchiness when massaged into your dog’s hot spots on their skin – the areas they may have been nibbling, licking and biting!
Other ways you can help your pet
If you don’t fancy trying home remedies or you have already tried them and they haven’t been as successful as you’d hoped, there are some other natural options you can try, such as natural supplements.
