Our In-House Vet Dr Barbara Fougere BSc BVMS (Hons) MODT MHSc (Herb Med) BHSc (Comp Med) Grad Dip Herb Med, Grad Dip VCHM, Grad Dip VWHM, Grad Dip VA gives advice on joint care this winter.
Winter is a beautiful time of the year, but not for our joints! Cold weather causes our circulation to dive deep into our body to keep our internal organs warm. This means circulation and nourishment of the joints is reduced. That’s why we tend to be stiffer and achier in winter. So too for our pets.
That changed circulation affects not only the joints, but skin, brain, and muscles too. What can we do to offset the cold and make our pets more comfortable in winter?
If your dog is short haired, consider a jacket and boots when out for a walk
Cats will naturally snuggle into a warm blanket
With central heating a cost concern, a heated pet bed is beneficial for two reasons. One, it keeps your pet warm at a low cost, and two, if your sleep is disrupted by wriggling pets, this helps keep them off the bed throughout the night- a better night’s sleep for you. Just make sure the heated bed is high quality and safe.
Make sure food is room temperature or warmed on a cold night.
Supplement with BRN Joint Care Advanced for senior cats and dogs and those pets showing stiffness or prone to arthritis- this supplement contains natural ingredients to help support circulation to the joints and maintain healthy joint function and mobility.
Central heating can lead to dry skin and coat. Dogs and cats will therefore appreciate some extra brushing and grooming over the winter months, to stimulate blood flow to the skin, coat and joints. Some gentle massage will never go astray either.
Supplement with easy-to-use BRN Omega EFA Advanced Oil– to help support and lubricate joints, and protect against dryness in the skin and coat, as well as supporting a healthy heart, and brain naturally.
Simple steps can make a difference to comfort and mobility and general health throughout the winter months. Most importantly keep your pets moving whether through walking, or an active 10 minutes of play once or twice daily. For cats too…a fishing toy while you watch the news can keep them moving and counter the sedentary lifestyle over winter.
